that capitol. >> reporter: absolutely, george. this whole story has become a full-blown crisis of trust between the united states and some of our oldest allies. trust. four months ago, president obama stood there at the brandenburg gate, the symbolic heart of germany, and declared that the nsa surveillance programs were bound by the rule of law. they targeted security threats, not the communications of ordinary people. we now know at that moment the nsa was morn toring ordinary europeans and tapping the cell phone of german chancellor, angela merkel. for almost five years, the president had no idea that the u.s. was listening in on the cell phone of angela merkel and 35 other world leaders. the wall street journal citing unnamed sources said it wasn't until an internal review was launched that the president found out about the top-level spying.

>> we can take steps to put in place greater oversight, greater transparency and constraints on the use of this authority. >> reporter: the white house says that they've stopped spying on chancellor merkel. a german paper revealed that the u.s. embassy is the site of a major american listening post, spying on the german government and on business leaders here in berlin. the leaks and outrage continued to spread. now in spain where documents leaked by edward snowden suggest the nsa man tored 60 million spanish phone calls in a single month. the outrage is palpable. in the press, on the streets. the people in this country feel the nsa has invaded their countries and their privacy. george? >> thanks, terry. let's get more on this from jon karl. they're saying the entire nsa program under review? >> reporter: that's right.

they're saying nothing of substance about the reports yet but pointing to this review which they say will be done by december 15th. but, the nsa released a statement over the weekend saying that the nsa has never discussed with the president any program involving espionage on german chancellor, angela merkel. the president has to explain to our allies why we have been spying on them and explain why he, the president of the united states, didn't know anything about this for five years. >> hard to believe they wouldn't tell him. mean while, on the domestic front, healthcare.gov under continuous fire. kathleen sebelius will go to capitol hill and face a grilling. and more calls over the weekend for her to go. >> reporter: she'll get hammered. take a look at this. over the weekend, healthcare.gov underwent a facelift. actually, an unfacelift, you might say. that smiling face of

healthcare.gov. that woman is now gone. we never knew her name. the most famous anonymous woman in america. no longer there. >> not since siri. okay, jon, thank you very much. >> okay, george. now to the growing manhunt for the four escaped inmates on the run after their daring jailbreak. the men following the plumbing pipes of a brand-new jail to freedom. ryan owens is in oklahoma this morning with the latest on all that. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. here it is. the very door those four waltzed right out of early sunday morning undetected. the story of how they got to the door from the inside is something you have to hear. even the sheriff hunting the four admits they're crafty convicted who cooked up quite an escape. >> they were in jail. they had all the time in the world to think about how to do things. >> reporter: the foursome's flight to free some began oust all places the jail bathroom. they unscrewed a metal plate on the shower ceiling. they hoisted themselves up to a crawl space five feet tall and three feet wide. one by one, they followed the

jail's plumbing system. at the end of the pipes, authorities say the men knocked holes in the concrete. dropped through the holes to the ground floor and walked right out the door. >> this is the door they came out of. >> reporter: the sheriff thinks these four may have been planning their get away for several days, maybe a week. it was early sunday morning just before 3:00 when someone called the cops to say four guys were running down the streets in jail jumpsuits. maybe they were halloween costumes, the caller thought. police soon found the jumpsuits ditched in an alley near the fire station. an account at the jail showed those four were gone. >> as of right now, we haven't come up with any leads so far. we'll just hunt them until we know we've found them. we'll get them sooner or later. >> reporter: these four were here in the county jail waiting to be transferred to a state

prison on a variety of charges from burglary to drugs. they did not commit their crimes together. they suspect they have already split up, which will make it all all the more difficult to track them down. robin? >> thank you, ryan. we turn to josh for the other developing stories this morning. >> we're beginning with a violent scene at one of the most famous sites in the world. an suv swerving into tiananmen square. burst into flames. you can see them there. the police are not confirming whether the crash was in fact deliberate. the crash killed three people and injured 11 tourists and security guards. a powerful storm bearing down on southern britain. a rescue boat searching for a boy swept out to sea. with waves up to 25 feet and winds nearing 100 miles per hour. two ferries carrying hundreds of people were temporarily stranded. meanwhile on land, trees were blocking roads and rails. 250,000 homes without power so far. a man trying to fly to los

angeles detained in montreal after agents say they found parts of a potential explosive device in his carryon. they are not elaborating, but they were concerned enough to search a nearby apartment and evacuate surrounding homes. the suspect is now being questioned. here at home, america is mourning the loss of one of its founding fathers of rock 'n' roll. he was one of the most influential figures in rock 'n' roll history. first, as the frontman for the velvet underground. then, on his own. to many, his music embodied the spirit of their america. from the '60s to today. ♪ hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side ♪ >> reporter: with songs we have all heard time and again. like "walk on the wild side." injured person being pulled away. the ride taking off. giving passengers no time to put on safety restraints. >> i heard people hit the metal floor. real loud, multiple hits. >> reporter: this morning, the ride's operator is preparing to face a judge. police arrested 46-year-old tim tutterrow on saturday, saying the vortex's safety system was deliberately tampered with before thursday's accident. tutterrow is charged with three felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious bodily injury. five people were injured, three still in the hospital, including a 14-year-old. >> it makes me mad to think that anybody would put people's safety in danger. and i'm not mad, i'm furious. >> reporter: police have yet to release any motives. he had worked for the company, family attractions amusements, for four years. he's a married father of two from georgia. his attorney tells abc news tutterrow is devastated.

now fair officials are saying the vortex ride had a problem with a switch last monday. >> the labor department did inspect the ride to make sure that that problem had been fixed. and it had been. >> reporter: after that, police say the ride was tampered with. family attractions says it has an excellent equipment safety record and never before experienced an incident like this one. fair officials won't say exactly what was allegedly tampered with. experts say it probably involved an override of computer sensors. tutterrow's bond set at $225,000. he will be in court later this afternoon. and, robin, police say more arrests are expected. >> they've been working very hard on this case. now to the latest on conrad murray. he walked out of jail early this morning, two years after his conviction in connection with michael jackson's death. now he's looking to return to medicine. cecilia vega has more. >> reporter: this morning, conrad murray is a free man.

after two years behind bars in a los angeles jail. overnight, he was swiftly driven away, avoiding jackson supporters who were angrily waiting. his lawyer got in this heated exchange of the jackson fans. >> if you were not so ignorant, you would know he was not convicted of murder. he was convicted of a crime of negligence. he loved michael. michael loved him. >> reporter: murray, convicted in 2011 for administering that fatal dose of propofol that killed michael jackson. he served half of his sentence, getting credit for time served. he's hoping his appeal will not just vindicate him but let him get back to practicing medicine again. court records show he's already filed a petition in texas to have his medical license reinstated there. he hopes to work as a doctor once more in california, too. >> if he doesn't get a favorable result, he's indicated he wants to go to the california supreme court and into federal court, if need be.

>> reporter: the jackson family is far from happy with the attorney for the matriarch, katherine jackson, released this statement. we hope he can never practice medicine again and will not violate his hippocratic oath and hurt another patient. lawyers for murray say he wants to be with his family and get back to practicing medicine. murray's lawyers say he's willing to go all of the way to the supreme court if he has to to prove his case. but first, she says, the disgraced doctor needs time to adjust to the shock of life as a free man. robin? >> thank you very much. got to be watching to see if he gets the license back. we said we would be checking in live all morning with univision's hit show, "despierta america." lara and sam are there live in miami. the show is one wild ride every morning, we hear. we introduced you earlier to karla and raul. and the rest of the crew. i'm afraid to ask at this point. you have a very special pooch

remains behind bars, charged with felony assault. according to d.c. police, brown and a man with him were arrested early sunday morning after allegedly attacking 20-year-old isaac adams parker outside the "w" hotel in washington, d.c. police say parker sustained a bruised and swollen nose. this video on brown's youtube page shows him shortly before the incident, inside a nightclub where he had been hosting a party. it's what happened next that's in question. the victim says in the police incident report he attempted to get into a photo with brown. the rapper said, quote, i'm not down with that gay expletive. i feel like boxing. brown then punched parker in the face. according to the report, brown's bodyguard threw a second punch but brown's camp claims the victim and a friend were trying to get on brown's tour bus and that brown and his bodyguard were merely trying to stop him. >> the issue is going to be

whether prosecutors can prove that what he did is a violation of d.c law. if that's the case, he's subject to a violation in los angeles, where he could get up to four years in prison. >> reporter: the latest incident could spell major trouble. brown is still on probation for a 2009 assault conviction involving then girlfriend rihanna. not to mention his run-in with the law earlier this year, fighting with singer frank ocean reportedly over a parking spot. and in june, police investigating a bottle-throwing brawl with drake. inside a new york night club. >> i think this being his third violation, the judge is probably going to throw the book at him. now brown is expected to be released later today. he'll appear before a judge. worst case scenario, roughly four years behind bars, if they can determine he violated the probation. >> thank you, paula. now to the latest on the trial of the utah doctor accused of murdering his wife.

his former mistress expected to take the stand tomorrow. the prosecution says martin macneill wanted his wife out of the way so he could be with her. abc's ady aditi roy has the story. >> reporter: she is the other woman. >> we were involved a number of years ago. >> reporter: in the trial of martin macneill. prosecutors say he killed his wife, michele, so he could continue his affair with his reported mistress. >> i had an interest board. where i posted things i was interested in. it was instant messenger, he replied to one of the subjects i posted. >> did the relationship become sexual? >> it did. >> how often were you having sexual relations? >> we would see each other about a couple times a month. we would have sex probably half the time. other times it was just lunch. >> reporter: wilson said he gave her a debit card, helped pay for

her nursing program and moved her into a nearby apartment. >> so he's paying for the housing there? >> yes. >> reporter: prosecutors argue that he gave his wife a lethal dose of painkillers after recovering from facelift surgery, a facelift that prosecutors say he insisted she had. >> i understand martin's wife was found collapsed. he tried to resuscitate her. she was taken to the hospital, coded, and then passed away. >> reporter: he invited his lover to his wife's funeral. >> did you speak to the defendant at the funeral? >> i spoke to him briefly after. i said i hope you're all right. if there's anything i can do, please let me know. >> reporter: macneill eventually moved willis into their home as a live-in nanny. >> was there any question he would have you as a nanny? >> i don't think martin would have had me come and help if his children would have objected to me. >> reporter: willis said the relationship is over, but she
